Making wall art

Have you ever seen some nice typography wall art in someone’s home or a retail store?

Perhaps you liked some of the features but if you could just alter it slightly to suit your style, you would buy it in a snap and put it up on your wall.

Well, fear not! You can.

Today’s tutorial will be turning your favourite quote into wall art that you can frame and hang proudly on your wall and in your home.

Here’s what you need to get started:

  • Tombow Dual Brush Pens
  • Tombow Fudenosuke Hard Tip Brush Pen
  • Canson Watercolour Paper
  • Cup of Water
  • Paint Brush
  • Heat Gun

Got your supplies ready? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Find your favourite quote. Some of my personal favourites include the words written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Maya Angelou, Cheryl Strayed and of course Dr. Seuss!

Step 2: Choose a few of your favourite Tombow Dual Brush Pens that complement each other or look eccentric together! These brush pens will paint the background of your wall art. When you’ve chosen the 3-4 colours, go ahead and make streaks across the page using the thick side of the brush.

Step 3: Using your paint brush (one preferably thicker than mine if your sheet of paper is quite large) and dip it in your cup of water. Using your wet paintbrush, brush wet strokes against the streaks you created in Step 2 and extend the colour to the white areas of the canvas. Tip: Do this for all of the same coloured streaks on your page before switching to another, to avoid the mixing of colours (unless this is what you want to go for).

Step 4: Once you are happy with what you have on your canvas, let it dry. If you have a heat gun, you can use that to help dry your wall art faster.

Step 5: Once your wall art has dried, it’s time to write your quote on top of your faux water colour background. Make sure you pre-plan how you are writing your quote (spacing, where to break it up, etc) and then go for it!

And that’s it! You’re done! If you want to fill in other spots of your canvas with more watercolour, feel free to and add any extra special embellishments or sparkle ✨

All that is left to do now, is to frame it and put it up proudly on your wall for everyone and yourself to admire. 🙂

Happy crafting friends!
